In 1993, DiC Entertainment released a pair of cartoons based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog ran on weekdays in the United States, meaning five episodes aired a week. The series had a high episode count as it was intended to be broadcast in syndication, meaning it could be sold to multiple television stations across the United States.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was a comedic series, with exaggerated slapstick a common feature. The series owes much to classic American cartoons such as Looney Tunes, with Sonic himself being something of a parallel to Bugs Bunny, frequently donning paper-thin disguises to outwit his foes in a manner that could only happen in a cartoon world. Nevertheless, the series is arguably closer to the Sonic video game world than almost any other animated adaptation of the series, changing perhaps the least about the overall make-up of the series and maintaining the sense of wonderment that Sonic’s world can be anything you want and populated by anyone you can imagine.

The series also featured segments titled “Sonic Says,” in which the hero would impart life lessons or morals to viewers. These ranged from standard fare such as warning about the dangers of tobacco and alcohol, to general messages of positivity such as the benefits of reading, to the seemingly outlandish, such as warnings not to climb into washing machines. No, of course we’re not making that up. At the time, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was often dismissed as juvenile because of its tone but, in the intervening years, the larger Sonic community has come round on the series, accepting it on its own terms and realising the comedy holds up much better than viewers at the time may have realised it might.

The following table lists each Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog episode in order of their original United States airdate.

Production/Home Video Order

The following table lists the episodes in the order they were originally produced and also represents the order they were initially broadcast outside of the United States. This is also the order they are most commonly placed in for home video releases, effectively making it the correct “viewing order” – though continuity is usually a less vital component in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, some characters do recur and one adventure does take place over four successive episodes.
