Between 1994 and 1996, Ladybird Books, an established name in children’s literature in Britain, produced media based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series. In addition to creating storybooks for younger reader, they released a number of activity books and puzzle books.
One of the most notable books Ladybird produced with the Sonic license was Sonic the Story, the third and final time the Kintobor backstory favoured by UK adaptations of Sonic was actually visually depicted (though Kintobor himself did not appear). Some of the most beloved Sonic books Ladybird created were Where’s Sonic? and Where’s Sonic Now?, a Sonic take on the Where’s Wally? format. Unlike the much later version of the book, Ladybird’s used all original, hand-drawn art, giving it much more flavour.
Perhaps the most internationally well-travelled Sonic book by Ladybird is the Sonic the Hedgehog Joke Book. This collection of puns and gags enjoyed a second life online as various wags digitally edited the pages to make the jokes much ruder than originally written.
