In 2020, Paramount Pictures released what would become the first in a series of film and television productions starring Sonic the Hedgehog in a live-action hybrid setting (with Sonic, Tails and later Knuckles being computer-animated). Initial trailers for the film resulted in skepticism and fan backlash over the design of Sonic himself. At no small cost to Paramount, Sonic was reanimated in his entirety and the new design proved much more popular with fans.
Rocky beginnings aside, the film was an instant success, which meant the green light was given to a sequel. The star performances of Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik went down a treat with viewers. The second instalment introduced Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba and added Tails to the main cast after his post-credits cameo in the first film. In a decision that further impressed long-time fans of the series, Tails was voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who had long provided his voice in games and cartoons. After only minor fan cajoling, O’Shaughnessey was given equal billing on the film poster alongside Schwartz and Elba, proving once again that Paramount were willing to listen to their audience.
Not long after the second film’s release, it became clear there would be a third film, as well as a number of televised adventures set in this new continuity. The first such television series gave the spotlight to Elba’s Knuckles and was highly promoted on the run-up to launch, an indication that the film studio behind the series are keen to continue promoting the Sonic series into the future.
