Starting in 1992, Shogakukan would publish a series of manga based on the Sonic the Hedgehog characters. Perhaps most interestingly, rather than being a single series, the first Sonic manga was actually multiple series, each with the same premise and characters but aimed at different ages of children.

This Sonic manga is arguably the first major adaptation of the Sonic series, beating its earliest Western counterparts to the punch by several months. In addition, it also features the series debuts of Amy Rose and Charmy Bee, who would later go on to become major characters in the video games (with Amy eventually becoming a main cast member).

Unfortunately, few examples of these manga exist online. None of the series are available in their entirety and none of them have ever been officially translated. As a result, to many English-speaking Sonic fans, the Shogakukan manga represents something of a holy grail for the series. Fortunately, it is known that the entire series is archived, so none of it is technically “lost media,” though this has no bearing on the widespread availability of the series.

NB: As on the Adventure Master List, stories are grouped together by sub-series. Because most of this continuity is not available online, even in an unofficial capacity, and none of the stories can be viewed in full, this series is listed here purely for completion’s sake. Until the stories are available in full, in the name of fairness, The Kintobor Computer will not attempt to review any of them.
