Sonic Boom

In 2014, Sega of America partnered with French animation production company OuiDo! (later Technicolor Animation Productions) to create Sonic Boom, a multi-pronged effort to bring create a cross-media series. Sonic Boom would enjoy its own video games (produced by Big Red Button and Sanzaru Games) detached from the main Sonic video game continuity in addition to a spin-off of Sonic Dash, plus comic books produced by Archie Comics and a cartoon; all of which shared the same continuity, a first for the series as Archie’s comic adaptations of previous Sonic cartoons had diverged to the point of incompatibility.

Fan reaction to the redesigns of the main cast was initially largely negative. Many fans did not understand the need to redesign such iconic characters as Team Sonic and Doctor Eggman. Ultimately, however, most came round on the designs once it became clear they would have no bearing on the rest of the Sonic franchise and gave the characters of Sonic Boom a distinct flavour.

Of the three Sonic Boom video games, the two 3DS games were well received, but the Wii U title was lambasted by Sonic enthusiasts. Much better received were the comic book, which allowed the Archie team to get a little sillier than usual, and the cartoon, which is almost inarguably the most fondly remembered aspect of the series. Sonic Boom shifts the focus of the series from largely action-oriented to being primarily humour-driven, resulting in a number of hilarious gags which soon became oft-repeated in the fan community.
