In 1993, British publishing house Fleetway Editions acquired the license to produce a comic based on the properties of Sega. What hit newsstands was Sonic the Comic, an anthology comic which initially featured Sonic in the lead strip and a revolving cast of Sega Superstars in the back-ups. Before long, however, the Sonic-focused content grew to surpass anything else until, eventually, the Sega Superstars were phased out to give more page space to strips which highlighted Sonic’s friends and foes, primarily Tails, Knuckles and Amy.

STC, as it was known to its readers, owed much to the heritage of great British comics, perhaps most vitally 2000 AD (with which it shares much of its DNA) and DC Thomson’s humour comics, chiefly The Beano and The Dandy. Unlike the standard American comic book format primarily employed by the Sonic comics produced by Archie Comics and IDW, STC‘s page count usually followed a 7-5-5-5 format, meaning most issues featured four strips, with the lead (Sonic) strip being a seven-page adventure and the others being five pages each. So as not to stifle storytelling, these adventures were often multi-part stories or part of an ongoing series of adventures. The rest of the comic was given to various feature pages, including Sega news, reviews and game guides, reader art and letters pages.

Sonic the Comic gained an initial following by riding the wave of momentum Sega’s Mega Drive pushed forward in the UK as the region’s most popular 16-bit console. However, it retained its readership thanks to the incredible work of the creative minds that refused to treat it as just another children’s comic. While the minds behind the comic recognised their audience were young, they knew children shouldn’t be spoken down to and presented intelligent, nuanced versions of the characters, most famously a flawed protagonist in Sonic, whose internal anxieties manifested as external brashness. It is an altogether common occurence in the British Sonic community to meet someone who grew up reading STC and who still holds it in high regard to this day, with many of those readers keeping the flame alive.

NB: All release dates listed on this page given to multi-part stories refer to the release date of the first part of that story.

Original Pitch Documents

Courtesy of STC scribe Nigel Kitching, we’ve been given permission to host these original pitch documents sent by Nigel to the comic’s editors over the years, with pitches for story ideas. Some of these ideas ended up being printed pretty much as pitched, some were tweaked slightly and some (particularly in the earliest pitch) were rejected entirely, including an entirely different backstory for Sonic.

1993 pitch

This document appears to be Kitching’s earliest pitch document to editor Richard Burton, suggesting a backstory for Sonic’s powers totally different to what was eventually used, the suggestion of the unused character of Warp the Squirrel, plus a handful of stories ideas. Some of these story ideas were used with various degrees of modification (Super Sonic, Sonic No More and The Special Zone, the latter sharing elements with the published strip Girl Trouble) but one (Sonic Versus Tails) was rejected entirely.

1995 pitch

This document is labelled a “rough guide to future stories.” Here, Kitching outlines his approach to long-term storytelling and how he aims to make all his stories accessible, but loyal readers are rewarded with a sense of continuity. The document covers the aftermath of the Sonic & Knuckles adaptation and suggests potential scheduling so characters don’t appear where they shouldn’t and to allow fellow Sonic writer Lew Stringer to share the lead strip. The pitch also alludes to a love triangle between Sonic, Amy Rose and Johnny Lightfoot which was only directly hinted at once in the comic – and is seemingly the first time Kitching toyed with killing Johnny off, which he would eventually do as the comic came to a close.

1996 pitch

This document for editor Deborah Tate outlines the lead up to Issue 100 and the landmark issue itself. Kitching was writing the Sonic and Knuckles series with Lew Stringer writing Sonic’s World, hence that series run from issues 97-99 isn’t covered as Kitching left that open for Stringer. The major beats of the story in issues 97-100 are largely unchanged but some of the details diverge quite noticeably from what is seen here. Kitching also notes the story should make a big deal over what Robotnik had planned for Sonic post-issue 100, obviously cognisant that a landmark issue is also sometimes seen as a suitable jumping off-point for readers.

1999/2000 pitch

This document addressed to editor Andy Diggle outlines what would be Kitching’s final pitch for the comic before it stopped printing new stories. The pitch covers what Kitching refers to as the “improved plot of issues 182-184,” presumably around the time he learned issue 184 was to feature the last new story. Most of the elements pitched here were expanded into the stories seen on the page, with a very minor tweak to Chaos’ fate to allow for a Big the Cat cameo.

The following table lists each Sonic the Comic strip in publication order. If you’re looking for a particular story but can’t remember which issue it appeared in, check the list below to find it. As new entries are added to the site, you will be able to click on their title to read more about them. For ease of navigation, each story’s feature character is also listed. Note that this table only covers the stories featuring characters related to Sonic; Sega Superstars strips are listed below.

Chronological reading order

The following list gives every story in Sonic the Comic‘s Sonic-focused continuity in chronological reading order. Because Sonic the Comic was an anthology comic with many stories taking place over multiple parts, it is not possible for every story in every issue to occur concurrently, particularly in the case of many issues where the same character appears in more than one story.

This list is an “order of events” that allows a reader to work through the Sonic-related stories of STC in an order that maintains a logical continuity, doesn’t result in inexplicable plot holes (and, in fact, fixes a handful from the original print run) and also doesn’t spoil intended story flow. That is to say, a true chronological order of events would require things such as flashbacks to be read without proper context, with some sites messily suggesting readers should switch between stories to read a handful of panels or pages. A chronological reading order instead provides a best reading order for the stories when divorced from the physical comics, preserving plot twists and surprises while also maintaining a logical progression of the ongoing story. For ease of navigation, each story’s feature character and the original issue the story appeared in is also listed.

Sega Superstars stories by series

The Sega Superstars stories are not listed on the above chronological reading order table as, for them, their print order is the same as their chronological reading order- and, of course, they have no bearing on Sonic’s adventures so wouldn’t fit anyway. Instead, for your ease of navigation, these stories are grouped below by series in order of publication.

Shinobi

Sega’s ninja master’s adventures actually predate STC itself as the first strip in this continuity appears in the 1993 Sonic the Hedgehog Yearbook, the only strip in that publication which belongs to the STC continuity rather than the newspaper strip continuity (though this couldn’t have been known at the time). Shinobi also has the honour of being the first Sega Superstar in Sonic the Comic history. Shinobi, real name Joe Musashi, starred in five stories in this continuity with a focus on martial art action as he fought to rescue his love, Naoko, and thwart the evil Neo Zeed organisation which used martial arts to further criminal activities.

Golden Axe

Golden Axe is Sega’s swords-and-sorcery high fantasy series and its stories in STC were published under the title “The Legend of the Golden Axe.” The stories fit pretty well into the continuity of the video games, taking place between the second and third main instalments of the series. The series mixed fantasy adventure with humour, representing an early example of Gilius Thunderhead being seen as a lighter character often used for comic relief. Gilius, along with Ax-Battler and Tyris Flare, enjoyed two adventures in the pages of Sonic the Comic.

Wonder Boy

Wonder Boy, or Monster World, is a series of games Sega originally produced along with Westone, though with Westone’s closure, the property now remains with Sega. While also a swords-and-sorcery series like Golden Axe, Wonder Boy maintains a much lighter tone and aesthetic. This translated to the comic strip adventures of Shion, the titular Wonder Boy, who was something of a reluctant hero who rather wished everyone would stop calling him Wonder Boy. The first Wonder Boy strip holds the distinction of the Sonic the Comic story with the most individual parts at eight, though the page count of the strip was four instead of the later standard five meaning the story came in at almost the same overall length as the six-part adventures which ran alongside it. Shion starred in two adventures in STC‘s pages.

Kid Chameleon

Kid Chameleon was a highly challenging platform game which saw the player character traverse levels by wearing various masks to transform into and take on the powers of a diverse number of hero characters. Sonic the Comic‘s Kid Chameleon strips serve as an adaptation of the game, with the main character, Casey (so called after the game’s initials) entering the corrupted Wild Side arcade game to rescue Suzi, the girl he likes. Casey starred in two stories in STC, the first of which had no specific title.

Streets of Rage

Sega’s ever popular beat-’em-up series, as famous for its groundbreaking soundtracks as for its intense brawling action, was given a unique adaptation in Sonic the Comic. Rather than a direct one-to-one adaptation, the series merges elements of the first two games to create its world. The main trio of the series are Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding and Max Hatchet (former professional wrestler Max Thunder in the games), later joined by Skates (Eddie “Skate” Hunter in the games). The series owed much to American action films of the 1980s and the last story is something of an homage to the 1979 film The Warriors. The initial story did not run under a specific title until it was printed in a collected edition. The vigilantes enjoyed four adventures across STC‘s publications.

Decap Attack

Among Sonic the Comic readers, there may be no Sega Superstar strip more beloved than Decap Attack. Of all the games to receive an adaptation in STC‘s pages, Decap Attack was almost unquestionably the most obscure. The game has a cartoony horror aesthetic which translated well to the comic strip, far and away the most comedic of the Sega Superstars selection. Whereas Sega were naturally quite protective of their larger properties, the Sonic the Comic creative team soon found the video game company had little interest in lesser titles such as Decap Attack, giving the writers and artists free rein to be as irreverent as they liked. Decap Attack’s enduring popularity with readers saw reanimated mummy Chuck D. Head star in thirty-one stories in STC‘s run.

Ecco the Dolphin

Star of the hauntingly surreal series of the same name, Ecco the Dolphin was surprisingly popular with British Sega enthusiasts of the 1990s. What initially seemed to be a cutesy game aimed at younger players practically immediately reveals itself to be an almost melancholy adventure with Ecco eventually fighting horror-inspired alien creatures to save his pod of fellow dolphins. The heroic mammal saw two adventures in STC‘s pages, interacting with all manner of weird, wonderful and beautiful creatures. The first story did not run under any specific title.

Eternal Champions

Eternal Champions was to be one of Sega’s most hotly anticipated video games of 1994 and was heavily promoted in North America and the UK. This led to the game receiving strips in Sonic the Comic as well as being the only Sega Superstars story to receive its own special issue, the special being where the origin story of the group was told (meaning you can choose to read Death Isn’t Forever as the first story if you so prefer). The strip, like the Eternal Champions Adventure Gamebooks, slightly alters the central concept of the series. In the games, only one of the Champions may survive and save the course of history. In STC and the Gamebooks, however, all of them are granted a reprieve from death to work for the betterment of history. The Champions worked as a group not dissimilar to Marvel’s X-Men and various combinations of them starred in five stories in this continuity. Note that Larcen’s name is misspelled in the title of the final story, though not in the story itself.

Sega Pirate TV

Sega Pirate TV, uniquely, did not refer to a game but to an advertising campaign in which British television airwaves were supposedly hijacked by Fez-Head and Skull, two video game obsessed time travellers who could leap into television channels to influence what was being broadcast- and pull people from the real world into their game world too. The crazed (and extremely expensive!) adverts led to a sole, equally unhinged, comic strip in much the same vein, with Fez-Head and Skull bringing a group of couch potatoes into their digital world to play a series of very silly games.

Mutant League

Mutant League represented the first time a Sega Superstars strip didn’t focus on characters created by Sega themselves. Instead, the games were published by Electronic Arts. The Mutant League video games were comedic horror-and-supernatural-inspired twists on American football and ice hockey, respectively. The series played similarly to Electronic Arts’ contemporary sports games in those genres, but with a lot more comic violence. This carried over into Mutant League’s sole STC outing, a wild, comedic take on what a game of Mutant League Football might look like.

Megadroid

Megadroid was a unique case in Sonic the Comic as he was the comic’s mascot. Megadroid would serve as an avatar for the comic’s incumbent editor, allowing a friendly face to answer reader mail and provide contextual footnotes in comic strips, referring back to events of past issues where necessary. Megadroid enjoyed two comic strips of his own during STC‘s run, one for each of his designs.

Marko’s Magic Football

The second video game to receive a Sonic the Comic adaptation despite not being a Sega creation was Domark’s Marko’s Magic Football. This platform game saw the player control Marko who (you may be ahead of us here) had control over a football with magical properties. In actuality, the football had gained the properties upon coming into contact with toxic sludge, which had the unfortunate side effect of mutating organic life into hideous monsters. Naturally, Marko does what any small child in this situation would and goes about setting things right. The sole comic strip the series received was an adaptation of the game and was a wonderful piece of slapstick silliness in the vein of The Beano. No surprise, considering its author, STC mainstay Lew Stringer, is British humour comics royalty.

Sparkster

Sparkster was the third and final Sega Superstars series to come from a video game not created by Sega, specifically Konami’s Rocket Knight series. Sparkster enjoyed a great deal of popularity in the 1990s and so it comes as little surprise he was beloved enough to receive a comic book adaptation. In a wonderful twist, the sole Sparkster adventure from STC was later reprinted in full when Limited Run Games released Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked.

Shining Force

The final Sega Superstars strip was based on Sega’s roleplaying series Shining. The series is another high-fantasy adventure of swords-and-sorcery, though the comic strip puts an unexpected twist on proceedings as the tale develops. The heroes of the Shining Force enjoyed a sole STC outing.
