From 1993 to early 1997, Troll Associates (later Troll Communications) published released a series of six novels based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series, all of which written by Michael Tietelbaum. The books were aimed at younger readers, presumably around the 7-10 years mark.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this series is how it merges multiple different Sonic the Hedgehog continuities. There are elements present in this series which it shares in common with the Sonic video games, with both of DiC’s original Sonic cartoons and with the Archie comics, resulting in a setting which is at once familiar and yet all its own.
Perhaps amusingly, the final book in the series shares its name with an infamous cancelled Sonic video game intended for release on the Sega Saturn. This means it is the only official instance of something called Sonic X-Treme actually releasing, though it seemingly has absolutely nothing to do with the planned game.
