From late 1993 to early 1994, Virgin Books released a series of four Sonic the Hedgehog novels. As British books, they used the now-established Kintobor back story, yet leaned more heavily into the setting of the video games than other contemporary continuities to come out of Britain.

The books were all released under the pseudonym of Martin Adams for the name of consistency but were actually the work of three creators. Carl Sargent wrote the first and fourth books, James Wallis wrote the second and third books and Marc Gascoigne edited all four to ensure the tone remained consistent throughout the series.

Reportedly, the writers of the books were very fond of the series and were looking forward to writing more instalments, as well as writing for other Sega properties such as Ecco the Dolphin, but these plans never came to fruition. Some of these books are held in extremely high regard by British Sonic fans of a certain age as they represented an early and still rare example of a Sonic product which didn’t talk down to their audience and trusted them with slightly more intelligent concepts than some alternatives at the time.
